#SUEZ4Ocean clean-up of Uphill Beach

On 24 July 2018, during Hilton's annual Global Week of Service, SUEZ recycling and recovery UK joined forces with volunteers from Doubletree by Hilton Cadbury House and Hampton by Hilton Bristol Airport to help clear plastic from Uphill Beach near Weston-super-Mare.

Their efforts are a part of Hilton’s week-long celebration recognising the company’s year-round commitment to serving and enriching the communities where team members live, work and travel.

The event was organised by SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, who manages the waste and recycling for more than 80 Hilton hotels across the country, as part of their global #SUEZ4Ocean initiative. The 54-strong team of ocean guardians collected over 20 bags of waste.

In May, Hilton committed to halving its environmental footprint and doubling its social impact investment by 2030. With this commitment, Hilton plans to reduce water usage by 50 per cent and is committed to removing plastic straws from all of its 650 managed hotels globally. Hilton will save an estimated 35 million straws per year from potentially ending up in the ocean. These goals are part of Hilton’s Travel with Purpose corporate responsibility strategy to further the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

Cassie Brice-Bennett, Senior Key Account Manager for Offices, Hotels and Leisure at SUEZ, said: “There are 269,000 tonnes of plastic in the ocean, and 80 per cent of it is reaching the sea through gaps in the waste stream on land. We are pleased to be partnering with Hilton to tackle ocean pollution and look forward to working together to capture more waste materials for recycling at source, keeping them in use and out of our waterways.”
