Primary school students champion sustainability with upcycled bird feeders
The hands-on workshop, led by Jessica Prosser, Recycling Officer for SUEZ, introduced students to the concept of upcycling—transforming discarded items into functional and beautiful products. The children worked with materials such as plastic bottles, and leftover scraps to craft bird feeders that will not only beautify their gardens but also support local wildlife.
"We believe in the power of education to drive change," said Jessica Prosser, Recycling Officer at SUEZ "By engaging with students in fun and interactive ways, we hope to inspire the next generation to think creatively about waste and the environment. Today’s workshop is a perfect example of how we can all contribute to a more sustainable future."
The event was met with enthusiasm from both students and teachers, encouraging discussions about recycling, conservation, and the impact of waste on the environment. The school’s teacher, Emma Cocker, commented, "This workshop has been an incredible experience for our students. It combines creativity with environmental responsibility, which is something we strive to teach in our curriculum. The children are going to be taking part in a recycling poster competition in the spring and this workshop was a great way to kick start our ideas about recycling."
SUEZ is dedicated to partnering with local schools and organisations to promote environmental stewardship and community involvement. In addition to workshops, SUEZ provide educational materials and resources available to download for free on their website for both students and teachers to continue exploring sustainability initiatives in the classroom and at home.
