Successful WEEE roadshow in Maidstone brings community together to tackle e-waste
On Saturday 05 April 2025, the SUEZ team in Mid-Kent proudly launched the first of our new WEEE Roadshow events at the Maidstone Repair Café, held in Lockmeadow Market Hall – and what a fantastic start it was!
The event aimed to create real community engagement around electrical waste awareness and repair, with 294 attendees welcomed through the doors, all eager to learn more about sustainable electronics use and recycling.
A total of 76 electrical items were brought in for repair – and of those, 59 were successfully fixed on the spot, 12 were repairable with parts or professional assistance, and 5 were responsibly recycled as end-of-life products.
A highlight of the day was our giant pink 1100-litre WEEE bin, which served as a great conversation starter. Curious visitors flocked over to find out more about what qualifies as WEEE waste and how their old electronics are handled once dropped off.
Our team also set up a dedicated engagement stand, where we displayed jars of electronic fragments provided by SWEEEP Kuusakoski in Sittingbourne. These showcased how items are dismantled and repurposed - revealing the surprising amount of recyclable materials hiding in everyday devices. The interactive display sparked plenty of meaningful conversations and eye-opening moments for visitors of all ages.
Commenting on the success of the roadshow, Partnership and Community Engagement Coordinator in Mid-Kent, Atlanta Giddings-Wilson, said: “It was brilliant to see how engaged the community was - not just in repairing their devices but also in understanding what happens to them at the end of their life. This is just the first of many WEEE roadshows in Mid-Kent, and we’re excited to build on the momentum with our upcoming events.”
