Carnival Atmosphere in Cramlington: Seghill Family Fun Day Helps Raise Nearly £3,800 for Charity

On Saturday, 31 August 2024, local waste management company SUEZ hosted its annual Family Fun Day at its Seghill facility, bringing together residents, local businesses, and families to raise money for its corporate charity partners, Macmillan Cancer Support and the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

Approximately 200 people attended the event, which featured a diverse range of attractions, including an open mic session, live music, a bouncy castle, tombola, raffle prizes, and various food and drink stalls. Seven local businesses also set up stalls, offering visitors a chance to browse and purchase unique items.

Over the last 12 months, SUEZ has organised a series of pop-up reuse shops at the Seghill site. These shops, which sell items donated by residents that would have otherwise gone to waste, provide affordable pre-loved goods at a time when many of us are conscious of what they are spending. The donations raised from the reuse shops, combined with funds raised at the Family Fun Day, amounted to nearly £3,800. This sum will be split equally between Macmillan Cancer Support and the BHF, two charities SUEZ are proud to support.

Victoria Pritchard, Regional Manager at SUEZ, expressed her gratitude and delight at the success of the event: “We couldn’t be happier with how the day turned out. The support from the local community has been nothing short of amazing, and it’s heart-warming to see everyone come together for such meaningful causes. Their contributions will go a long way in helping those in need.”

Flo McMullen, Corporate Partnership Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, said, “We are extremely proud of our partnership with SUEZ recycling and recovery UK which has raised over £550,000 over the past 10 years. Macmillan relies almost entirely on public donations to make a difference, so every penny raised helps us continue to do whatever it takes to help people living with cancer live life as fully as they can.”

Nigel Cole, Partnership Manager at the BHF, said: “For more than 60 years, we have funded research that has turned ideas that once seemed like 'science fiction' into treatments and cures that save lives every day. But millions of people are still waiting for the next breakthrough.

“It is only thanks to the generous support of companies like SUEZ that we can keep research going and discover the treatments and cures of the future.”

Following the success of the pop-up reuse shops and Family Fun Day, planning is already underway for similar events in the near future.
