City of Doncaster Council extends waste collections contract with SUEZ to 2028

The contract for household and commercial waste collections between the City of Doncaster Council and SUEZ recycling and recovery UK has been extended for a further two years until March 2028.

The extended contract, which covers collections from over 150,000 homes and businesses, will continue to support Doncaster’s environmental targets by reducing waste sent for disposal and promoting recycling. SUEZ will support the council with the introduction of Simpler Recycling across the borough, aligning with national waste policy and aiding the transition towards a zero waste, circular economy.

Since signing the original contract in 1991, waste collection services have undergone significant improvements over the years. Now in its fifth contract renewal, the service has evolved to better meet residents' needs. The rollout of blue wheelie bins in 2017 made recycling even more convenient. Additionally, three older depots were replaced by the council with a modern waste transfer station at Kirk Sandall, enhancing the efficiency of the service.

The contract has also supported local communities following the launch of the Doncaster Environment Fund by SUEZ in 2019, which has since donated over £80,000 to local community groups and charities including recent support for Doncaster food banks. This initiative is funded in part through SUEZ’s kerbside collection of small electrical items, where proceeds are reinvested into community projects. The greater the volume of items collected; the more resources are available to support local initiatives.

John Scanlon, CEO at SUEZ, said: “We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with the City of Doncaster Council. The extension is testament to the strong relationship that we’ve built for over 30 years, and we’re committed to continuing the shared goal of delivering a service that is as sustainable as possible for residents and businesses across Doncaster.”

Kellie Hopkins, Service Director (Environment) at City of Doncaster Council, said: “As a council, we are committed to providing the best possible service to residents and SUEZ share our vision to improve recycling rates and become as sustainable as possible, as quickly as possible. We look forward to working together to make greater progress towards this vision, and I want to thank everyone involved for their continued work to create a better service for our communities.”
